<\/a><\/p>\nI have\u00a0two beautiful daughters who are teenagers now… I know I know… teens!! They have been learning to play music since they were little ones. Fortunately, all those years ago, we found the BEST piano teacher EVER in the WHOLE WORLD to teach our girls!!! So when their teacher asked ME to make her\u00a0special birthday cake I was\u00a0so thrilled to get to make a grand piano cake<\/strong> I\u00a0did a happy dance \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n Not being a piano player myself,\u00a0I studied up on designs, proportions and exact key placements before embarking on the project. I wanted it to be elevated on legs, rather than flat on the cake board, so I threw on the tool belt<\/strong> and\u00a0custom made a 3 legged elevated\u00a0cake\u00a0stand measured to\u00a0a template I made. Then I\u00a0covered the base of the board with some of the teachers favourite sheet\u00a0music and\u00a0 lacquered it to give it that antiquey look. It turned out like this: Here are some progress pics.<\/p>\n Ready for the fun bit? \ud83d\ude42 Carving the cake. Stack the cakes on top of one another on a working\u00a0cake board, not the display one,\u00a0layering dark chocolate ganache in between. Then\u00a0carve the slab to\u00a0match the template. Easy eh?\u00a0Once that is done,\u00a0cover the entire surface with that rich dark chocolate ganache you whipped up earlier and your piano cake is ready to play, well,\u00a0play with fondant anyway. Lift it onto the raised board ready\u00a0to decorate.<\/p>\n Make the lid by cutting a cardboard cake board guided by the template, then cover this board with a thin layer of black fondant on either side.\u00a0\u00a0Tinker around with the ebony and ivories<\/strong>\u00a0getting the placement correct, especially if you’re making it for a concert pianist! Add a music stand, a name plaque,\u00a0and\u00a0voila… your composition is complete…. Ta daaaaa<\/p>\n Seriously, we should have hired a professional piano mover to take this to the venue because IT WEIGHED A TON! On the day of the party it was absolutely pouring with rain. We had to get the cake inside the venue without a drop of rain falling on\u00a0it. OK… challenging… but\u00a0with\u00a0a few umbrella handlers\u00a0in tow we made\u00a0a ceremonious walk from the car to the venue and\u00a0reached the\u00a0cake table without a single drop of rain on it. This makes a lot of cake but the length and width of the piano was 14 inches so, what can I say…\u00a0go for it! Be warned though, these big\u00a0mud cakes take a very long time to cook, generally over 3 hours each. Can you handle all those\u00a0hours of chocolate baking aromas<\/strong> filling your house… Totally!!<\/p>\n<\/a> <\/a><\/p>\n<\/a>Cover the entire cake with black fondant. Then cut a piece to go on top of the piano with\u00a0wood-grain coloured fondant (you can follow the same template for this).\u00a0Detail this section with\u00a0a sculpting tool (or the back of a paintbrush works just fine\u00a0if you don’t have special tools)\u00a0as shown in the above pic. Use wooden dowel painted with black food colouring to hold up the lid.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a>Thank you for reading\u00a0my post.
